The name is on everyone’s lips: Thomas Tait has been catapulted into the fashion spotlight after having been awarded the LVMH Young Fashion Designer’s prize yesterday.
The Young Fashion Designer prize was set up by luxury goods conglomerate LVMH in 2013, with an aim to support young fashion designers, as LVMH’s Delphine Arnault says: “It’s a passion, but also a responsibility to discover the young designers of tomorrow.” Judges on this year’s panel included a roster of the industry’s most prestigious names, from Karl Lagerfeld to Marc Jacobs. The LVMH jury picked Tait over 11 other finalists, including Simone Rocha or Suno, who were selected from none less than 1200 applicants. The runners up were the labels Hood by Air and Miuniku.
Hailing from Canada, Thomas Tait is based in London, where he set up his label in 2010 after having studied at Central Saint Martins. Up until now Tait had been running his label with barely any external support. However, being awarded this prize means that now, Tait will not only receive €300,000 to invest in his label but will also benefit from business and production mentoring from LVMH for a year. This kind of recognition and support from the LVMH powerhouse will inevitably carry the young designer forward onto another level…and we’re excited to see where it takes him.
