It’s the news everyone had been waiting for with baited breath: who was going to take Council of Fashion Designers of America awards at this year’s ceremony?
On Monday evening, all eyes were turned towards New York to see who the CFDA had decided to present with their prestigious awards, and especially so on singer Rihanna, who was selected as this year’s Fashion Icon for her influence on a global level.  Although her particularly daring sheer dress may have stolen the show, it’s important not to forget what the awards are really about: acknowledging the best fashion talent coming out of the US right now.
Joseph Altuzarra had already been in the news recently, following the announcement of his upcoming collaboration, and once again made headlines by taking away the award for Womenswear Designer of the Year, whilst the design duo behind the label Public School received the one for Menswear. The industry’s favourite fashion twins, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, obtained an award for their label The Row as best Accessory Designers. In addition the CFDA looks beyond the US’s borders, with Raf Simons collecting the International Award for his work at Dior.
Altuzarra highlighted the CFDA’s crucial role in the fashion industry, saying: “The CFDA is a really big force in the fashion community and a force as an advocate of the younger generation.” Aside from being an occasion of glamour and luxury, the ceremony is a chance to reward excellence. The annual CFDA Awards have become a key event that consolidates the American fashion industry by bringing together all the most talented names, established and young alike, for the space of one evening.
