Selfridges has unveiled a new project for Autumn/Winter 2014, entitled “Masters”, a tribute to fashion’s most influential designers. The department store has selected 12 key names in fashion, awarding each one a title for the design trait they have become emblematic for:
Azzedine Alaïa - The Master of Architecture
Dries Van Noten - The Master of the Eclectic
Jean Paul Gaultier - The Master of Expression
Jun Takahashi of Undercover - The Master of Subversion
Marc Jacobs - The Master of Mood
Oscar de la Renta - The Master of Elegance
Paul Smith - The Master of Inspiration
Rick Owens - The Master of the Elements
Roberto Cavalli - The Master of Glamour
Thom Browne - The Master of Showmanship
Stella McCartney - The Master of Modernity
Yohji Yamamoto - The Master of Defiance
Each designer will create a piece or capsule collection representative of their signature style for the project and will also have their own window display at the flagship store on Oxford Street.
The Masters campaign is to be a multimedia experience as Selfridges will have its own cinema in store, the result of a collaboration with Everyman. For the duration of the project there will be screenings of some of the films that inspired the designers. "Masters" is also to be accompanied by a fashion film created specifically for the purpose of this project by SHOWstudio, in partnership with luxury mobile phone brand Vertu.
Finally, Rick Owens gets a special mention with “The world of Rick Owens”, a celebration of his label’s 20th anniversary. He is to design a 20-piece capsule collection exclusively for Selfridges and will take over four of the store’s windows. To crown it off, a special Rick Owens statue is to be erected above Selfridges.
"Masters" launches at Selfridges at the end of August.
